Hoot Hoot

These two are waiting to be joined by lots of other pots, hopefully tomorrow.

Yo Ron, I just wanted to say that I really love what you are doing lately, and these mugs are super fine examples of this new direction. I am not always a fan of drawing on pots, but you seem to have hit on something that has really captured my imagination. It has been great watching your evolution, and I am so glad you have been willing to spend the time and effort required to share this process with the rest of us. Thank you, thank you, thank you Ron!

Thank YOU Carter, I really appreciate you telling me this. It's been a real struggle for me in many ways and continues to be. I guess it's finding my way with this deco that is so challenging. I like these mugs too, I have some plates out there right now that I don't think are going to be so good. I'm still learning. I'd like to hear anything specific you have to say about why these seem to appeal to you. Have a good weekend!

Absolutely Ron! First off, I have always been a fan of your handling of the clay. I am always a form-first kind of guy, so your shapes have always drawn me in. What I find so exciting about your recent pots, and these mugs in particular is that the drawings seem to fit the pots much better. Maybe that is just subjective, but sometimes I feel that your pots are so nuanced that a simple line drawing doesn't do justice to the complexity of the pots themselves. Filling out the details of your imagery seems to be a positive direction. I once made the statement to another of Ron Meyer's students that I thought Ron's pots were "unsophisticated". Of course that was the wrong word. His pots are 'crude' maybe, but incredibly focused on the kind of details that make them up. Your recent drawings seem to have much more of this focused detail that is in line with the subtlety of your forms. I have also loved the cross hatching backgrounds you have done on some of your other recent pots. In my mind these new details help draw the pot together. Sometimes I felt the simplicity of the line drawings were actually a distraction. They so stood out from the form that they sometimes competed with it. These are just my impressions, but I have to say that I do LOVE what you are doing these days and I am so happy for you to be exploring this new direction. I hope that was helpful feedback. Keep up the good work!

Thanks so much Carter for that. I do want the drawings and the pots to be one. That is the hard part for me, I too have always been most interested and concerned w. form. My salt glazed pots were all about that. Marrying the deco and form is soooo hard, for me anyhow. I do think that I am hitting it sometimes and it's good to hear that you feel like adding the details are helping. I think that has helped the work for sure. I just did a few little pen and ink drawings this morning that were all about cross hatching and filling in.
It's hard being at this 'new beginning' place with something. I have to remember that I am still learning, experimenting. I have to try and ask myself the right questions, and step back and see the pots. Having your feedback (and that of others) is very helpful and welcome. Best, Ron
