well done. i'm a big fan of the "dual contour" bowls, i make lots of them. i use clary illians book as a text for second semester students onwards.

Is there a 'dramatic' difference in the thickness of the wall where you change direction inside the bowl and not outside the bowl? I thought that was unhealthy for the pot--perhaps only for pots that you will cook in? Very interesting. I do have the book and have read it several times but have not used it as a 'workbook' as I intended/intend to do. Thanks for the demo. Back to the book...

Hi Gay, just a little more clay there. It's a misconception that the wall thickness must be exactly the same throughout the pot. Even pots that are meant for cooking can have variation. Think of casseroles with thick rims or lid seats. It's probably not good to have a thick bulk of clay where the floor changes to the wall of the pot, that is going to make the pot heavy and may lead to some problems if the pot was cooked in. It was an eye opener for me to have a class with Clary and watch how she structured her pots.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure I have a whole head-full of misinformation! Nice to clear a bit of it out! : ) Gay

Ha. Me too. I think we are all taught the "rules" early on so we can have some success at what we are making. As we continue, we see we can break some of them or even ignore some all together.

[...] I blogged about it before in this video about foot treatments. [...]

nR6gBq I'm not easily impressed. . . but that's impressing me! :)
