Thanks Linda. That's a Japanese tool made for cutting feet. We made them at Penland one year. I'd like to have a few more. I have a blacksmith friend who's offered to make some for me. Maybe I can get some extras to sell. I think the name for it is 'kanna'.

I saw someone use a tool much like that many years ago. Many blank looks when I would describe it. Glad to know that I am not completely (wellll....) crazy!

Like those feet; they balance very nicely with the bowl. I think I'd like drinking tea from one.

Out of curiosity, what clay body do you use or do you mix your own?

I like that tool too. Is your chuck completely dry or do you make a new one with each batch of bowls?

Thanks Suzi, The clay body I use is from Highwater Clays and is Stan's Red.

Trish, I make a new chuck when I make the bowls. The chuck will keep okay wrapped in plastic for quite a while though. So it's leather hard, not dry.

A couple questions about your video. First, what stage do you trim at? Your clay looked pretty soft; much softer than what I trim anyway. Second, I love the trimming marks on your pieces, but why the decision to cut that tall foot instead of throwing it on the bowl? Keep up the good work!
