Door for my Wood Kiln

I don't have a wood kiln.  But I may some day and if I do it will probably be a bourry box design*.   If I do build that type of firebox I'll need a cool door and I just happened to find one this last week.

I can't tell ya where I 'found' it.  There was a whole stove but it was in pretty bad shape.  So bad that I was able to practically rip this part off with my bare hands!  (flexing muscles as I write that).  There were some little doors too and I may go back for them.  And there's another stove as well, in even worse shape but harder to get to.

Anyhow I think this would make for a cool firebox door.  I could pack the back with some fiber for added protection.  I like the built in thermometer, not that it'd be of any use.

I unloaded the kiln last night.  All these pots are going to a shop later in the week.

There were more and I've set most of them aside to go to Cape Cod.  I'll be getting in one more firing before Michael Kline and I head north .

Off to assemble some boxes and to handle cups.  Thanks for checking in.

*the other option would be an updraft bottle kiln, but that's another post.

That door would be so cool on a bourry box kiln! Jeff and I used to fire the NH potters guild community kiln. It is a bourry box with a very nice door that swings out and away from the person stoking... a great design but it sure isn't pretty like the door you found.
We will be up north the same weekend as you, Jeff is teaching a workshop at Purple Sage Pottery in Merrimac, MA. Lets wish for good weather... NO SNOW! (we are driving)

Hey Ron,
That's a great door. Good find. I recently found your blog by way of some photos you have online of your trip to England. I can't remember how I found them , but that's the magic of the web. I also found Doug Fitch and Hannah McAndrew's blogs the same day . You all make amazing work. I've been making pots for years and just this fall , I too went to the "low side" , got rid of my cone six glazes and clays , grabbed some earthenware and never looked back. You look like you are enjoying what you are doing and I know how you feel.
If we are dreaming about wood kilns , how about a catenary arch? you get a lot of volume for the least amount of bricks!
Anyways, Hello again, and I'll keep checking in on your progress. Good luck "up north" !

Cheers,

@Michele, Oh brother I hope it doesn't snow!! We are driving up too.

@Andrew, Thanks for the nice note. Glad to be 'found' and I'm happy that you discovered Doug and Hannah too. Yes, I am really enjoying low fire. I do miss my salt firing days but hopefully I'll get a stoneware firing in this summer. I don' t miss the high propane prices!
I do love a nice catenary arch, and you are certainly right about the brick saving.

I'd love to visit Nova Scotia someday. That would really be north for this southern boy!

Ron - they are getting 6" of snow in parts of New England today so hopefully this means the chances are LESS for us!
