I'll be adding new info here as time allows. (Last update 1/17/2011)
Wheel:
I throw on a Leach treadle wheel built by Mark Polglase.
Clay
I am currently using Stan's Red earthenware from Highwater Clays.
I soften my clay by slicing it up out of the bag and placing it in a bucket of water for a short time. I then run it through my Bluebird 440 pugmill.
Glazes and Slips:
Always test slips and glazes on your clay and in your kiln before mixing a large quantity. What works for me may not work for you.
Ayumi Horie White Slip cone 02
OM 4 Ball Clay 36.1
EPK 18.1
Neph Sy 3.8
Frit 3124 25.8
Zircopax 13.8
Add:
Buttercup #6406 1.4
Gray #6572 0.24
Note: This slip has been specially formulated to fit Ayumi's clay and glaze. I have been using this slip for over a year now and have found it to be compatible with my clay and the following glaze.
Nebraska Clear Glaze cone 04
Gerstley Borate 55
EPK 30
Silica 15
I slip the pots at the leather hard state. I do all my layout decoration work on bone dry pots with a 7H pencil. I incise all the lines thorough the slip with a steel pointed tool that resembles a 16d nail. This too is done at the bone dry state. I get a nice line this way, but it is dusty. I recommend wearing a respirator.
Firing:
I bisque and glaze fire to cone 04 in a Skutt electric kiln.
Photography Information:
I use a Canon Powershot SX10IS camera.
I have a 28" Light Tent that I bought HERE. I use a graduated background that I bought from the same location.
In the studio:
I stream KEXP or The Current.
I drink lots of tea. Usually gingseng oolong, sencha, (both from Upton Tea) or PG Tips (honey, no milk).
Videos:
I have quite a few videos on YouTube that show some techniques of decorating and throwing as well as all sorts of other bits and pieces. Click HERE to go to my videos.
Other Sources:
Kari Radasch has a great Technical page. Her information was very useful to me when I started making earthenware pots. Thanks Kari!! Click HERE.
